Mud Day in Albuquerque: Leaving the road in the dirt.

The rig is parked by the Bosque. No sterile media talking heads today—just raw, family-friendly chaos at the Open Space Visitor Center.

I’ve shut off the engine at the Open Space Visitor Center. The Sandia Mountains are cutting a sharp line against the high-desert sky, but today, everyone is looking straight down at the ground.

Forget the polished, hyper-curated city schedules. The City of Albuquerque’s Parks and Recreation department just decided to let the entire community cut loose and get gloriously, completely unhinged. They are throwing an official celebration for International Mud Day right here on Saturday, July 11th, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

If you’ve been trapped in an air-conditioned office or a sterile routine all summer, consider this your official invitation to jump into the muck with both feet.

The Driver’s Scene: Squishing Through the High Desert

I walked out past the visitor center trails early this morning. The city crews weren’t setting up manicured velvet ropes. They were running heavy water lines directly into fields of clean, open dirt, turning the dry New Mexico earth into a massive, glistening oasis of pure mud.

The atmosphere out here is pure, unstructured joy. Kids are arriving in clothes their parents have explicitly given up on, and the adults aren’t standing on the sidelines.

The layout for the event is a beautifully messy circuit:

  • The Mud Obstacle Course: A dedicated stretch where children and brave adults can slip, slide, crawl, and test their balance through deep trenches of thick muck.
  • The Mud Kitchen: A hands-on station packed with old pots, pans, and wooden spoons where kids are busy mixing, pouring, and “baking” wild, imaginative mud pies.
  • The Mud Spa: A spot designed for a slightly slower pace, where you can slather the cool, mineral-rich earth over your arms and legs to let it dry under the midday sun.

When the heat peaks, the city has a water play area running to hose everyone off, alongside free paletas being handed out to keep the crowd cool while supplies last.

It’s growing faster than Tesla and SpaceX

Editor’s Note: What if you could claim a stake in the fastest growing startup EVER with less than $50? That’s what former tech executive Jeff Brown is revealing in this new presentation.

Even though this Elon Musk-backed startup has nothing to do with robots, self-driving cars, or rockets, it’s growing faster than Tesla, faster than SpaceX, and even 23 times faster than Nvidia. Click here to see the details and get the name of this startup, 100% free…

The Roadside Detour: Earth, Water, and Absolute Freedom

Before you pack up your lawn chairs and head out to join the mess, here is a piece of perspective from the driver’s seat.

Humans have been playing in, building with, and healing themselves with mud for thousands of years—from the ancient adobe structures that still stand across the Southwest to early childhood traditions across the globe. Somewhere along the line, modern life convinced us that getting dirty was a problem to be solved rather than a baseline human joy.

An event like this reminds us that the best things in life don’t require a corporate sponsor or a high-speed internet connection. Sometimes, all it takes to find absolute personal freedom and a real connection to the community is a garden hose, a patch of dirt, and the willingness to get completely covered in muck.

Grab a towel, look for the shade, and go get messy. I’ll be tracking freight lanes toward Arizona by Tuesday.
